Unfortunately, many folks are not careful and will often ignore common safety precautions that electrical contractors warned about. A licensed electrical contractor will always alert you to potential problems and provide solutions that will keep you safe inside your home with your family.

Most people will try to avoid calling upon an electrical contractor and perform minor work on their own. If that describes you, please follow some simple safety precautions:

Other times though, electrical contractors find themselves recommending simpler electrical safety tips. The most important thing in dealing with electricity is making sure that you, your family, and your home remain safe.

Share these tips with your close loved ones to be sure everyone stays out of danger:

During electrical storms, avoid using appliances or phones except in emergency situations. Do not take showers or take baths during storms. It is a good idea to keep flashlights in different areas of your home along with fresh batteries.

Be sure that all electrical devices and appliances have surge protectors. Never leave appliances plugged in where they have a chance of coming into contact with water.

Don’t use electric power tools and electric mowers in the rain. When using power tools outside, always plug them into a GFI type of outlet. Don’t forget to unplug all electrical power tools when they are not in use.

Periodically check all of your outlets for firm fitting plugs. These can overheat and risk fire. Make sure plugs fit outlets properly and avoid overloading outlets.

Check extension cords for any damage, cracks or frayed edges. Be sure they are not overloaded. Avoid using extension cords for anything other than a temporary source of power. They are not intended as a permanent wiring answer inside your home.

Avoid hiding extension cords under rugs, carpets, or furniture.

When in doubt, always consult a professional electrician.
