One of the challenges that many families face is getting and keeping children in their room through the night. Toddlers often are stubborn in staying late or even having trouble sleeping without their parents. Giving in to your kid’s pleas by letting them stay up late or having them eat snacks is sometimes not a good idea especially when your child has to sleep early.
The following are some tips which might help you manage bad bedtime habits in your toddler and instilling fine sleeping routine in them.
- Establishing a routine for sleep time. Making bedtime exciting and fun for your kid is one way of enticing him to sleep as well as giving the child the responsibility to weigh fun and sleep. Establish an enjoyable and exciting time for you and your toddler during bedtime. However, you must remember that the goal of this routine is to your toddler sleep.
- Always remind your kid the importance of staying in bed. It helps to be sweet with him by gently reminding your child to not leave his room or snuggling him once he goes to bed. However, if this does not work, be firm and quick with your reminder. Try reading him or her a story that is so much fun.
- Creating a reward system is also one good thing. Adapting a reward system might work for your child. Start the reward system by giving him a star or ice cream or even buying his or her favorite author. Buying books as a reward is also great since this will help develop his reading skills and of course, his imagination.
- Most importantly, follow your routine and stick with it. Once you and your child have finally established a routine for bedtime, it is only proper to keep it and maintain it as often as possible. Do not allow yourself to give in to the demands of your child. Instead, remind him to keep to his routines. It is also important to remain clearly consistent with the routine you form, and even the rules you have made. If possible, you should keep your established routine every night. Explaining to your child how important it is to keep to what you have agreed on may also help in instilling positive values in him.
